What type of organism does Salmonella infect and how does it infect it?

  • Depends which Salmonella you are talking about. There are lots of different types but the most common are Salmonella typhi (infects humans), Salmonella typhimurium (infects humans and animals) and Salmonella enteriditis (infects humans, animal and reptiles). Most infections are due to the ingestion of the bacterium so contaminated food or water is a common source of Salmonella.
