  • I only past my test 7 months ago and have woken up this morn to loads of snow. What is the safest gear to drive in? I drive a manual Peugeot 206 1.1 engine.

  • Whatever gear will allow you to drive safely for the road conditions.

  • If you're going down a steep hill, keep it in 1st and try to stay off the breaks. Its real easy to lock them up and wind up in a ditch. Also, if you have 4 wheel drive, put it in 4 wheel drive low. That will really help to slow the engine down. My best advice would be to downshift instead of using breaks to slow down.

  • You should drive in the HIGHEST gear possible for the prevailing weather conditions so that your car's *driven wheels do not slip or spin & so that you make GENTLE forward progression ! *Front Wheel Drive (FWD) on a Peugeot 206 1.1 ! If the wheels start to slip or spin back off the accelerator GENTLY to stop them from spinning ! It is IMPERATIVE in driving conditions of lying snow that ALL INPUT to CONTROL your car is done ever so GENTLY e.g. GENTLE acceleration, GENTLE braking & GENTLE steering !

N.B. If you should start to SKID & LOSE CONTROL then in conditions of LYING SNOW (ONLY) it is BETTER to LOCK your WHEELS UP (STOP them from SPINNING by BRAKING) & you will come to a HALT quicker than if you were to PUMP your brake pedal up & down in RAPID SUCCESSION - as cars equipped with ABS (Anti-Lock) Brakes will do !

REMEMBER that if you should start to SKID, it is IMPERATIVE that you turn the FRONT wheels into the DIRECTION of the SKID ! Turn the STEERING WHEEL in the OPPOSITE DIRECTION that the BACK END of the car will want to go (breakaway) !

Good Luck & Drive Safely & Slowly to suit the prevailing winter driving conditions !

  • It depends on the road conditions but driving slower in 3rd or 4th gear on a straight road will be better....

If you feel the tires losing traction underneath you, DO NOT drop to a lower gear suddenly, as this can cause the car to lose traction and skid. Start in a low gear and stay in a low gear if you are on a hill.

  • Any gear appropriate for that speed, Short Shift and Try to keep rpms as low as possible. for example if you normally shift at lets say 2500 rpm, shift at around 2000, and ease the clutch. This will help to prevent tire slippage.

  • any gear that will keep your engine controling the grip of your tires on the road or the snow, and I meant the slow speed as not to exeed 50 klm/hour, remember try as much as possible to slow down with your gear by shifting to low gear rather than your brakes.drive safely...

  • 5TH GEAR!!!! Power sledding in your car is the funnest.
