Re: B&W photos for the EOS Digital Rebel

  • Hi

I was just wondering if there was a special setting for taking B&W's on the Rebel? I remember a friend of mine had a point and shoot, and even on that camera there was a setting specifically for B&W, although I'm not sure what was so special about it exactly.

And, if there was a separate setting, what would be the purpose? or difference compared to a normal picture?

Thanks in advance for the input!

p.s. I looked in the manual already and couldn't find it.

  • A CD??? How does that work?

  • you can download the firmware hack on the net without having to buy the ebay cd.

Sometimes I enjoy setting the camera to b&w. For the same reason you film buffs shoot b&w, rather than just converting in photoshop. I like not having the color shot to fall back on sometimes. It makes you shoot different, I swear you think differently about the shots you take. Or maybe that's just me. :sillysmi:

  • Nope you cant shoot in B&W...but dont...that way you can convert it to BW...its much better....

  • I agree with Arty--much better to shoot with all the info you can, then convert to greyscale in PS.

  • Thanks! :)

[Edit] Im also scared...is it safe to download hacked firmware?
You can always go back if you want to...

Unless things go terribly wrong of course

I've hacked mine. It's not a risk... I'm pretty sure most serious 300D owners have hacked theirs... and I haven't heard any complaints about rebels dying from the russian hack. AND Canon serviced rebels with the hack installed in them, so you should be ok.

    Cheers and hack away.

  • btw. it's a great way to convert color into b&w via calculations, or edit the channels directly :)

  • Thanks! :)

I guess you're about to find out!
Make sure your virus protection is updated.

  • firmware upgrade or so, it simply adds a profile which allows you to shoot in b&w

  • I dunno if I wanna risk it really :S

just convert in PS....dont risk it.

  • I don't think you can shoot in b&w but I saw a cd on ebay which should allow you to :P

  • Ditto, Shoot in colour then covert to B&W in PS, also it maybe helpful to be in RAW mode

  • Not only can you do quick grayscale conversions in PS, but in case you're wondering about BW photography with colored filters, you can change from color to grayscaled with a red, blue, or yellow filter by hitting CTRL + 1, 2, or 3.

  • I would not do the hack for B&W ability...however, there are other (more useful) options. Mirror lock up is a big one.

I'm sure you could find a list of them somewhere.

Basically the hack "unlocks" the functions that the 10D has and the 300D does not.

Besides the sturdier body and the buffer chip...the 10D and the 300D are pretty much the same camera. Canon purposely disabled the 300D so that they could set a higher price on the 10D and have two price levels rather than just one.

  • Can someone show me a link to get all this updated firmware?

  • I dunno if I wanna risk it really :S

  • Thanks! :)

  • If the system is the same as on my 20d you just have to look under parameters in the menu and there should be a set under there that offers b&w and the associated filter and tonal effects.

  • I certainly think differently about my shoots when I know I'm shooting in B&W. If I was shooting in colour and converting later I would not be able to think like that.

  • Maybe I should ask cannon?

And maybe would it void my insurance?
And is it possible to put back on the old version?

  • Canon would tell you NO...that's why it's a hack.

Technically it would void your warranty but as mentioned, there are reports that people have sent in hacked cameras for repair with no repercussions...possibly they just reset the firmware, in which case you can just hack it again.

  • Oh, I see.

  • I agree, shoot color and convert. There are some great methods to covernt to b/w. I used to use the greyscale method but found it lacked good contrast. I use a program called Mystical TTC but you can create similar effects by using just straight PS.
