  • I have an Arab mare, and for this winter i'd like to have a GOOD winter blanket. I dont have much money to spend and i was wondering if this is a good blanket?

  • you have to look at the denier count. your first one, although cheaper has like 1200 or something. the second one, (btw 80 bucks isnt rather pricey) only has 600. unless your a master sewer you'll be replacing it next winter. they rip so fast. and just arnt warm at all. My horse has a weatherbeta will 2000+ count that cost me 200 dollars. but he stays warm and hasnt ripped it once.

  • if i were you i would go for the second one- it may be pricier but then all that means is that it should last----- it looks really nice, im thinking of getting that same kind for both of my horses,
    >you pay for what you get< go for the second one! good luck!

  • If you want something for turn out make sure it's waterproof! If your horse goes out with other horses don't buy anything under 800 Denier, you'll end up replacing it quickly. I like the McAlaster, Weatherbeeta and Hug blankets
Try www.horseloverz.com they usually have pretty great blanket deals.

  • the first one is a decent blanket if you live in the south it wont be very warm and if your horse is a little head shy it can be hard to get it on. I personally wouldn't suggest this blanket

  • I love this blanket and have ordered from this place a lot I think you will be very happy with this one. It has a belly band and is closed in the front. Good luck! http://www.bigdweb.com/detail.aspx?id=43...

  • the first mite seem a good choice because its cheaper, but it wont last half as long as the second one, also the first one is so cheaply made, with no hind shaping it will probably not keep the horses quartes warm or dry

  • The second one looks better than the first.

yes it may be pricey but when it comes to your horses health always think of your horse before the price.

  • Here are some nice, inexpensive winter blankets:

those are some really inexpensive blankets that are still really nice and will last a long time. especially the weatherbeetas. dover is a really good place to buy horse supplies, they always have sales. Their stores are mostly on the east coast, but you can have the supplies shipped.

  • I don't get it.

  • Of those listed the last one is the best. Second would be the second one listed. WeatherBeetas are very nice blankets..however you need to keep in mind a few things when buying the blanket. Make sure it is waterproof/breathable and for turnout! 600 denier is not very strong. You are better off spending more money for a higher denier because when your horse trashes the cheaper blanket you are just going to have to replace it. You will spend more money on a 1200/1600 denier turnout but when it rips the damage is less severe. You will also want to get one with ripstop nylon. This also keeps damages down. I prefer blankets with both the cross surcingle and leg straps. Also pay attention to the polyfil/weight of the blanket. I am guessing that ND getts pretty cold so you will want a heavy blanket.

WB blankets also come in three "levels" Orican, Landa and Saxon. Oricans are the better/pricier and the Saxons are more affordable.

A few weeks ago tons of places were having blanket blowout sales, so hunt around and you might be able to find a good deal. I got my horses some cheap rainsheets from chicks saddlery (chicksaddlery.com) I also scored my mare a WB for $50 at the Equine Affaire. amd a $350 Saratoga blanket for only $50 bucks at their warehouse sale. It had been sitting in the store not selling because it was an unpopular size so sometimes you may luck out.

  • The second one is much better, in that it has more straps and more fitting details, plus it is of much more standard construction.
The first one is simply a shell with a felt lining and has no fitting (gussets, neck shaping, etc.).

One thing that concerns me on the listing for the second one is that it says in one spot it is 1200D but below it says it's only 600D. The higher the Denier number (D), the stronger the outside of it. This makes a difference in how likely it is to tear. I would not buy a 600D blanket for outdoor use if your horse is turned out with other horses (other horses LOVE to come up and grab blankets with their teeth and pull...).

In blankets, as in life, you get what you pay for. Skip the cheapies, they aren't worth the money. One way we often get deals on blankets is buying/selling between those of us who get new horses....for example, if I'm looking for an 82" and my friend's new horse is a 78" but her old horse was an 82", she might give me a good deal on her old blankets.

  • I think the second one would be your best bet. It looks like it would last longer and it could endure a lot more. Even though its more pricey it would be worth your money.
