  • can i do my Masters in education with only a GRE and without being a certified teacher

  • Yes, but you can't teach without being certified.

  • There is a chance that you can do an MS degree in education without the teacher certification in a few colleges and universities. You must know, however, that this particular M.S. degree is designed for teachers who are doing more education courses either to specialize in education of disabled students, foreign languages, speech pathology, or some other specialized area of public school teaching demanded by federal or state laws. They also may want to increase their salaries in teaching in areas where they are licensed.

What you are asking the college where you are applying is to separate these special courses in education from other basic courses offered for M.A, degrees in other academic fields like English, History, Mathematics, Art, and the like areas. The college where you will be attending cannot do that because they are complying with federal laws in education. They may also refuse to break up their specialized education courses because they find that impossible to do.

However, there are better and possibly more costly ways to accomplish what you want done. The first of these is to transfer to another M,A. degree program in the liberal arts area or the sciences area.

It may be possible to do what you need to have done with the M.S. degree, but there may still be several things that must be considered. The college may not give you credit for all of the education courses that you will have to take. Moreover, it may be more costly for you because it would be like starting over if you already are enrolled in the M,S, degree in education, and you have taken courses and completed some education courses. A second reservation that comes up is the question of why do you want to take a education M.S. degree option just to reject the teacher's certification. Is it because you dislike the education you have already received in public school?
It is because of some thoughts that teaching is not what you want to do in your working lifetime? Is it because you think you have committed a terrible error in choosing education as a career? Do you believe that teaching is an unrewarding profession to follow, and you wish to change your options for your life?

After answering any one of these questions, above, there is one obvious answer that may have been overlooked without a thorough understanding of the purposes of higher education and the purpose of teacher education degrees. A person who feels that they are heading in the wrong direction in education still has options for a profession that does not involve education. One can accept the rewards of an M.S. in education and a teaching certificate without choosing a teaching position that he or she dislike. There are careers in sales, in planning education for the employees in business and industry, in state and federal government. Even careers in local government may be selected for persons with M.S. degrees in education. There are also positions in agricultural, food, and factories that hire persons with M.S. degrees.
